Ceramic vs. Infrared vs. Oil-Filled: How They Actually Differ
Ceramic heaters use a heating element to warm a ceramic plate, then push that heat into the room with a fan. They warm up fast and are the most common type you’ll find, which makes them a safe default for most rooms. Infrared heaters work differently — they heat objects and people directly with radiant energy rather than heating the air first, similar to how sunlight feels warm even on a cold day. That makes them feel warm almost instantly, but the heat doesn’t spread evenly through a whole room, so they’re better suited to warming a specific spot, like a desk or a chair, than an entire space. Oil-filled radiator heaters take the opposite approach: they heat slowly, using oil sealed inside the unit as a heat reservoir, and they keep radiating warmth for a while even after you turn them off. Most space heaters top out around 1,500 watts, which is the practical ceiling for a standard household outlet, so the real variable to pay attention to is how much space that wattage can actually cover. As a rough starting point, figure on roughly 10 watts per square foot for a room with average ceiling height and normal insulation — a small 100-square-foot bedroom is a reasonable match for a 1,000-1,500 watt heater, while a larger or poorly insulated room will leave even a full 1,500-watt unit struggling to keep up. Ceiling height, how many exterior walls the room has, and window count all push that number around, so treat it as a starting estimate rather than an exact formula. If a room runs unusually drafty or cold, it’s better to size up within reason than to buy an underpowered heater and run it at full blast around the clock, which wastes energy without ever quite getting the room comfortable.
Safety Features That Aren’t Optional

Beyond the ceramic-versus-infrared-versus-oil-filled split, it helps to think in terms of fan-forced heat versus radiant heat when matching a heater to how you’ll actually use it. Fan-forced heaters, which include most ceramic models, push warm air around the room and heat a larger area more evenly, making them the better pick for living rooms, home offices, or any space where you’re moving around rather than sitting in one fixed spot. Radiant heaters, including infrared and oil-filled units, warm whatever is directly in their path rather than circulating air, so they shine in situations where you want targeted warmth for one person in one place — a workbench in an unheated garage, or a reading chair by a drafty window. Neither type is universally better; it comes down to whether you need to warm a room or warm a person.
Where (and Where Not) to Place a Space Heater
Placement affects both performance and safety, and it’s worth being deliberate about it rather than just setting the heater wherever there’s an open outlet. Keep at least three feet of clearance from anything flammable — curtains, bedding, furniture, stacked papers — since that buffer is the single biggest factor in preventing a heater fire. Set it on a flat, hard, level surface rather than on carpet or an uneven rug, where it’s more prone to tipping. Bathrooms are a hard no unless the model is specifically rated for damp locations, since standard space heaters aren’t built to handle moisture exposure safely. The appeal of a space heater is heating the one room you’re in instead of the whole house, but it’s worth having a rough sense of what that actually costs before you leave one running for hours every evening. A 1,500-watt heater running at full power for several hours a day adds up over a heating season, and the exact number depends entirely on your local electricity rate. The real savings case isn’t that a space heater is cheap to run in absolute terms — it’s that heating one occupied room is almost always cheaper than raising the thermostat for an entire house, especially in homes with rooms that sit empty most of the day.
