How to Propagate Houseplants from Cuttings (Water and Soil Methods)

Propagating houseplants from cuttings is one of the most satisfying things you can do with a collection that’s outgrown its pots or gotten leggy over the summer — it turns a plant you’d otherwise be trimming back anyway into two, three, or a dozen new ones for free. It’s also far more forgiving than most people expect. You don’t need special equipment, rooting hormone isn’t mandatory for most common houseplants, and a cutting that looks like nothing more than a stem and a couple of leaves can turn into a full root system in a matter of weeks under the right conditions. The trick is choosing the right kind of cutting, giving it a clean cut, and being patient with the wait.
Which Plants Propagate Easily From Cuttings
Not every houseplant roots the same way, so it helps to know which category yours falls into before you start. Vining plants like pothos, philodendron, and tradescantia are the easiest possible starting point — cut just below a node (the small bump on the stem where a leaf attaches, which is also where roots will form) and they’ll root reliably in water within a couple of weeks. Plants with a more upright, single-stem habit, like fiddle leaf figs, rubber plants, or dracaenas, can also be propagated from stem cuttings, though they tend to take longer and benefit from rooting hormone. Some plants don’t propagate well from stem cuttings at all and need a different method entirely — snake plants root from leaf sections, and African violets can be started from a single leaf with its stem intact — so it’s worth a quick check on your specific plant before assuming the general method below will work.
Taking the Cutting
Use clean, sharp scissors or pruning snips rather than pinching or tearing the stem, since a clean cut heals faster and is less likely to introduce rot. For vining plants, cut a 4-6 inch section that includes at least two or three nodes, and remove the lower leaves so at least one bare node will sit below the waterline or soil line — roots form at nodes, not along bare stem, so a cutting with no submerged node won’t root no matter how long you wait. For single-stem plants, a cutting just below a leaf, ideally with a bit of the woodier lower stem included, tends to root more reliably than a cutting taken from soft new growth at the very tip. Take cuttings from a healthy, actively growing part of the plant rather than a stressed or yellowing section — a struggling cutting is trying to root and recover at the same time, and it usually fails at both.
Rooting in Water
Water propagation is the easiest way to watch progress, which makes it a good choice if you’re new to propagating and want to build confidence. Place the cutting in a clean glass or jar with enough water to submerge the bottom node or two, but keep any leaves above the waterline — submerged leaves tend to rot and can foul the water. Set the jar somewhere with bright, indirect light rather than direct sun, which can overheat the water and stress the cutting, and change the water every few days to keep it from growing algae or going stagnant. Roots typically start appearing within one to three weeks depending on the plant, and you’ll want to let them grow to at least an inch or two before potting up in soil — roots that develop in water are adapted to that environment and need a little length before they can reliably take up water and nutrients from soil instead.
Rooting Directly in Soil
Some plants, particularly succulents and a handful of tropicals, root more reliably straight into a lightly moistened, well-draining potting mix than they do in water, and skipping the water stage also avoids the adjustment shock some plants experience when moved from water roots to soil roots. Dip the cut end in rooting hormone if you’re using it, then insert the node-containing end into the soil deep enough that it makes good contact, and gently firm the soil around it so it stays upright. Keep the soil consistently barely moist (not soggy) for the first few weeks, and consider a clear cover or bag to raise humidity around the cutting, since a cutting without roots yet can’t pull up much water on its own and is more vulnerable to drying out than an established plant. There’s no visual confirmation that roots are forming the way there is in water, so the usual check is a very gentle tug after two or three weeks — resistance means roots have started; no resistance means give it more time.

Common Reasons Cuttings Fail
Rot is the most common failure, and it’s almost always caused by leaves sitting in water, a cutting kept too wet in soil, or a jar of water that’s gone stagnant and started growing bacteria — a mushy, darkened stem end is the tell-tale sign, and at that point the cutting usually can’t be saved. Too little light is the second most common issue: a cutting has no established root system to draw on, so it needs enough light to photosynthesize and support new root growth, but not so much direct sun that it dries out or scorches before roots exist to replace lost moisture. A cutting taken from a stressed, diseased, or very old section of the plant is fighting an uphill battle from the start, which is why picking healthy, actively growing material matters more than most people assume. If a cutting hasn’t shown any progress after four to six weeks and looks the same as the day you took it, it’s reasonable to try again with a fresh cutting rather than waiting indefinitely.
Moving a Rooted Cutting to Its Own Pot
Once a water-rooted cutting has an inch or two of roots, or a soil-rooted cutting shows resistance when gently tugged, it’s ready for its own pot. Choose a small pot rather than sizing up dramatically — a cutting’s young root system can’t fill a large volume of soil quickly, and too much soil around too few roots holds excess moisture and raises the risk of rot right when the plant is least equipped to handle it. Use a standard well-draining potting mix appropriate for the plant type, water it in well after potting, and expect a short adjustment period where growth seems to pause; that’s normal while the plant settles into soil, especially if it’s transitioning from water roots. From there, treat it like any other young houseplant: bright indirect light, water when the top inch of soil dries out, and patience while it establishes before expecting much new growth.
